1. Introduction#

Landslide susceptibility analysis is statistical analysis of various parameters with respect to the actual landslide area to classify the region of interest into different degrees of susceptibility. Different parameters affect the stability of mountain slopes differently. The weightage of each parameter varies accordingly. Following parameters can be considered as important parameters for landslide.

  1. Elevation and relief

  2. Slope of land

  3. Plan curvature

  4. Profile curvature

  5. Distance from river

  6. Distance from road

  7. Lithology

  8. Distance from fracture plane

  9. Land use

  10. Rainfall pattern

There are various methods proposed by different experts. Some of them are:

  1. Frequency ratio method

  2. Heuristic method

  3. Weight of evidence method

  4. Hazard Index method

In this tutorial we will learn hazard index method. This method is based on the tutorial provided by Cees J. Van Westen which can be downloaded at this link. This URL will lead you to many tutorials for hazard and risk analysis of various types of hazards. Visit the link to Exercise 3 where you can find materials related to landslide hazard. The original tutorial uses Ilvis open software. The purpose of this tutorial is to use Grass GIS, QGIS and R which are more popular recently and also easier to use.
