Background

After two weeks, the great Gorkha earthquake will complete one year. Its aftershocks has continued till date and expected to continue in the future until the situation underneath the surface of earth becomes stable. Yesterday one more aftershock occurred with the epicenter within Kathmandu Valley. People of the capital felt the jolt after quite a long time. We need to remember that until first 2-3 months after the earthquake, almost 5-6 aftershocks occurred every week. That is one aftershock a day. One or two aftershocks per week has been occurring till date. Therefore, yesterday’s jolt was nothing new except its epicenter within the valley. The following chart will clarify any doubt that yesterday’s aftershock was exceptional and to remind us the anniversary of the great earthquake. Aftershocks with magnitude greater than 4.0 was used to produce the chart and map.

Following figure shows the spatial distribution of aftershock count for 0.1x0.1 degree (almost 11km x 11km) grid. Most of the aftershocks have their epicenter in Dolkha and Sindhupalchok district.
